Welcome!

Welcome to the new school year! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful summer. My website has information that was given to the students on the first day of school. It is a great reference in case you can not remember some of my policies.
The students receive a weekly assignment sheet each Monday which lists the weekly homework, however in case it is lost, the homework is posted each week on this site in a calendar format. It also retains all past homework assignments. Homework is a very important part of the math curriculum. It's how the students practice new concepts and grow in their understanding. Thank you for your support of this. Please always feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTAL HELP IN MATH

REMIND your child to check the Assignment Sheet for homework assignments. These are handed out at the beginning of every week.
CHECK
to see that all loose math papers are stored in a separate math section of his/her binder and not just thrown into their backpack. Also, check that they are taking and keeping notes in a separate spiral notebook or small binder.
ASK
your child if any supplies are needed; pencils, red pens, paper, etc.
REVIEW
errors made on quizzes and homework. Samples of problems can be found in their notebook.
ENCOURAGE
your child to get help from me, and/or ask questions in class. A time can be arranged after school or at lunchtime.

MATH SUPPLY LIST

The following materials are required in Math class and will ensure success throughout the school year:

  • several #2 pencils with erasers; two sharpened #2 pencils should be brought to class each day (math assignments should be done in pencil or no credit is given)
  • eraser caps or extra erasers.
  • red colored pens or pencils; two should be brought to class each day (one as a backup)
  • generous supply of binder paper
  • single subject spiral bound notebook (just for math!)
  • divider for Math section in binder to hold homework assignments and completed quizzes.

The following materials are suggested:

  • a portable manual pencil sharpener with catch-all for shaving
  • extra erasers
  • a highlighter and/or colored pens for accenting notes

  • protractor (6th and 7th grade only).

PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES

1) Understand the Problem- Read the problem carefully. Identify the question. Disregard useless information.

2) Make a Plan- Decide on a problem solving strategy. What do I have to do with the information provided in order to solve the problem?

3) Solve the Problem- Useproblem solving strategy to answer the question. Ensure that you are using the proper mathematical operation(s).

4) Look Back- Check that your answer is reasonable, and then check for accuracy.

Algebra 1A and 6XY - Grading Policy

There will be three main criteria to determine the math grade.

1. Test average worth 60% of final grade
2. Quiz average worth 20% of final grade
3. Homework and notebook review average worth 20% of final grade

NUMERICAL PERCENT GRADE CONVERSION TO LETTER GRADE

59 – 0 F

The following code will indicate the completeness and effort of each homework assignment:

(4) …full credit - The work is completed on time, mostly accurate, written neatly in pencil on lined white paper, includes an answer column and the proper heading, illustrates the required work with the corrections shown in red pen.
(3) …partial credit – The work shows strong effort, yet may be lacking in one of the descriptors above.
(2) …half credit - The work is below satisfactory.
(1) … incomplete in many areas.
(0) … no credit- the work was not received or is done unsatisfactory

All homework assignments are due the next class meeting unless otherwise indicated.

Late homework: Late homework will only be accepted up to 5 days after the due date and will automatically receive one grade lower.

Absent homework: Absent homework should be completed as soon as possible but will be accepted up to 5 days late with no penalty.

CLASS BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS

Teachers have the right to teach.

Students have a right to learn.”

In order to help maintain an atmosphere in which this is possible, I will:

Respect my teachers and school, respect my classmates, and respect myself.

This means I will:

1. Be on time to class. I will be in my seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. (tardies will be reported to the administration.)

2. Come to class prepared. I will bring my Math book and/or workbook, my completed homework assignment, my math spiral notebook, paper, sharpened pencils, a red pen or pencil, and any questions I have. (No one is allowed back to their locker or homeroom.)

3. Pay attention, listen carefully and ask questions (by raising my hand) when something is not clear to me.

4. Listen respectfully to all questions that are asked.

5. Do my best to avoid any distracting or disruptive behavior which includes talking to others in the class.

6. Ask for help when I need it.

7. Always show my work, and always check my work.

8. Work hard and try to do my very best on all homework assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests.
